Higurashi in Sapporo Japan is a cool little bar located in the central entertainment district of Susukino. As most of you are aware there are hundreds of bars hidden away in multi storey buildings so it's kind of pretty hard to "stumble" into one of these. Higurashi is one of these places. It was recommended to me by a friend, otherwise I would never have found it. It is small and cosy inside with nice ambient lighting and is one of those bars where you feel comfortable going by yourself and just sitting at the bar chatting to friendly staff or read the wide selection of books and comics they have at the counter. They are all in Japanese so you can practice your Kanji reading if you are that way inclined.
They serve really good Japanese beer, not the regular large brands like Sapporo Beer, Kirin, Asahi etc, but real ales from the pump. They have a specials menu that changes regularly so can you try different kinds of beers from all over Japan. This is one of the few bars that I know of that serves good, hard to get, Japanese beers in Sapporo Japan.
I had a nice fruity ale from Osaka that was really smooth. The prices are a bit on the expensive side, but because of the rarity of the beers, I think it's worth it. Especially if you are sick of the usual bland Japanese lagers which all taste the same in my opinion. A pint of this Osakan ale was about 1,000 yen. There is also a seating charge of 300 yen which includes a tiny dish of pickles. A lot of small bars in Susukino have seating charges, which I'm not a big fan of, but it seems to be fairly common in Japan.
They also serve food and snacks but I only come here for the beer. There was a giant pigs leg on the bar too which was really cool. You could even see tiny hairs on the trotters!
